We Are Champions
“We Are Champions” was written by Kathryn Cloward in support of children fighting cancer and their families, and originally debuted in a live performance at the 2017 Rady Children’s Hospital Celebration of Champions annual event. "We Are Champions" was largely inspired by Samara, the daughter of Jennie Lapointe who's Kathryn's creative collaborator and co-author of Kathryn the Grapes Joyful Adventure.
When Samara was 16 months old, a tumor was discovered in one of her kidneys. It was removed and Samara spent much of her second year of life endured radiation and chemotherapy treatments and numerous hospital visits spanning countless hours and days. The treatments made her feel extremely ill. But as Samara shares, the one thing that helped her feel better was knowing she'd receive a new toy after her treatments. As she grew stronger and into remission, Samara expressed to her mom that she wanted to give toys to other children at the hospital to help them feel happy the way she did after treatments. That's when "Samara Smiles" started and why Kathryn has depicted Samara and her mom in multiple Kathryn the Grape books bringing toys to children in the hospital, in both Kathryn the Grape Let's Read Together Series book I Am Happy Being Me and Kathryn the Grape Affirmation Series book Kathryn the Grape's Piece of Love (as graphically shared in the images here).
